Joanna Birtles

Principal Lawyer

Joanna is a dedicated lawyer focused on providing support that allows for families & their children to have the best possible outcome and in many cases without going to court. Joanna has an extremely high success rate with many separations and child disputes resolved with mediation and minimal court proceedings.

Joanna graduated from the University of New England in 2012 and commenced work as a solicitor in Tamworth working predominantly in the areas of family law and care and protection. Joanna then spent 18 months as a mediator for Centacare NENW/Tamworth Family Relationship Centre mediating parenting disputes.

Joanna is a member of the NSW Law Society and the Family Law Council of Australia and has been practicing with Birtles Legal since 2017 when she returned to Tamworth to work with her father, Greg Birtles. Birtles Legal has now been passed down from Greg to Joanna who is now the Principal Solicitor and moving the firm to a family focused approach.

Prior to moving back to Tamworth, Joanna worked as Deputy Associate to Judge Matthew Myers in the Federal Circuit Court at Newcastle which provided her with invaluable insight into how the family law process works from the judges angle.

Joanna is strongly linked with services (such as Tamworth Family Support Service) that work alongside family law and in her commitment to make change, Joanna co-founded Fashion Exchange and Family Network, a local registered charity dedicated to supporting the disadvantaged in our community.

Focuses for Joanna when dealing with her clients are;

  1. Ensuring that childrens’ health & wellbeing are the priority;
  2. Engaging in a professional & ethical way;
  3. Empowering her clients for post proceedings.
